The Mexican Ceramics Residency is a non-instructional program that offers the unique opportunity to produce a variety of work on-site at Arquetopia or at our partnered studio at Talavera La Colonial (a prominent, historic ceramics factory in Puebla’s majestic historic district) and includes assistance from our experienced and local master ceramist from the community of San Pablo del Monte. The technique and studio facilities work according to the colonial ordinances of Puebla and the Talavera certified methods focusing on handmade processes; no industrial chemicals have been incorporated into the clay or glazes. This residency is for experienced ceramists only. No instruction is provided.
The relationship between American novelist, poet, and art patron Gertrude Stein, and her American life partner and Parisian scene doyenne Alice B. Toklas is one of the most influential meetings of minds in the last century. The pair met in Paris in 1907, and the 40-year relationship that unfolded became the bedrock of the Parisian avant-garde for artists and writers, producing not only Stein’s own famously experimental writing, but also fostering the careers of artists like Henri Matisse, Georges Braque, and Pablo Picasso.

A team of researchers are using aerial scanning technology to study Teotihuacán, the sprawling ancient city built over a thousand years before the Aztecs’s arrival in Mexico whose construction remains a mystery. Their findings, summarized in a paper published in the scientific journal PLOS One this week, illuminate the ways in which the site’s original inhabitants modified the landscape and shaped the modern layout of the region.
In Angkor’s Temples in the Modern Era: War, Pride and Tourist Dollars (2021), John Burgess describes how pilfering was such an issue under French colonial rule, which ended in 1953, that signs beseeching visitors not to destroy or remove objects were erected; major sculptures were moved to depots for safe keeping; and, to disincentivise theft, genuine items deemed of no archaeological interest were put up for sale. And this is to say nothing of the ancient antiquities remov...ed by their self-appointed custodians. Under the banner of patrimoine, or cultural heritage, many sculptures were hauled out of the jungle using rope pulleys and lowered onto rafts for transport to the museums of France, where they remain to this day. Others were sold to foreign institutions in high-priced sales, or exchanged in return for museum-quality objects from other countries. See more
Luna’s piece subverts the traditional Euro-centric cultural gaze that creates Native peoples as other. He calls upon museum-goers to look at him as he looks back at them, challenging the notion that Indians are dead and a relic of the past, they have the ability to live in the present day.
